August 11, 1999 Eclipse

By Carole Devine

One of the most powerful triggers of change is an eclipse. You can almost outline a life based on their affect on a person's natal chart. But some eclipses are more powerful than others because of how they fit into patterns with the current planets' placements. And of course, some affect certain individuals more than others because the eclipse can trigger either natal positions of planets and angles, or it can trigger progressed, directed or transiting positions. It is a potent timing device.

Quite a bit has been written this year about this particular eclipse because it will simultaneously be involved in a grand square configuration. It has been a very long time since anything this powerful has occurred (since 1910 when there was a weaker version), and because it is located in the fixed signs, it has particular significance.

The fixed signs have long been recognized as agents of change after being too long in stagnation. When patterns like this come about, we can expect major shifts, whether in human affairs or natural events. The importance of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) is even revealed in the Bible. In Ezechiel 1:10 there is a description of a vision of four faces: "And as for the likeness of their faces: there was the face of a man (Aquarius), and the face of a Lion (Leo) on the right side of all the four, and the face of an ox (Taurus), on the left side of till the four, and the face of an eagle (one of the symbols of Scorpio) over all the four." In this same chapter is reference to "Wheels" and the statement that. . . . the spirit of life was in the wheels." Ez. 1:21 (Horoscope wheels?) Isabel Hickey has said that the 15th degree of the fixed signs is the degree of the "Lords of Karma." Pretty heavy stuff. Let's take a close look at this approaching configuration and some of the symbology.

Sabian Symbols

In his book, The Astrology of Personality, Dane Rudhyar has clearly interpreted the Sabian Symbols in a few lines each. These symbols are "picture" essences of the meaning of each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac. The first degree of Aries (or any sign) is 0 to 1, so the reference to a degree will seem to be the next one in numerical value. Hence, when we speak of the fifth degree, we are referring to 4 degrees, by number, up to 5. Then it becomes the 6th degree, and so forth. The eclipse on August 11th will be at 18:21 Leo. That would be the 19th degree of Leo. The interpretation is: "A barge made into a clubhouse is crowded with revelers. The transforming power of pure joy over routine existence. Human fellowship in the effort to make life happier, freer."

The grand square itselt is made up of Mars in Scorpio, Uranus in Aquarius (Neptune also, but not in the configuration as strongly), Saturn in Taurus (and Jupiter, but in a lower degree) and the Sun, Moon and Mercury (also lower degree than the grand square) in Leo. A week later, the grand configuration is stronger with the Moon in Scorpio and Pluto stationary direct. Interestingly, with this configuration Pluto finally goes outside the orbit of Neptune, in itself a notable event. At first this seems ominous. After all, what could be worse than a conflict between Mars (God of war), Uranus (symbol of anarchy) and Saturn (conflict, pain and doubt, not to mention FEAR). And involving an eclipse?!? It would seem the sky would fall! In fact, this is further borne out by a prediction of Nostradamus who said:

"In the year 1999, in the seventh month
There will appear in the heavens the sign of the King of Terror
When the great leader of the Mongols is reborn
And Mars (war) reigns supreme once more."
X, 22

Eclipses come in pairs, and this one is preceded in the seventh month, July, the 28th, by a lunar eclipse also in Leo. Eclipses in Leo are often associated with events involving kings (and that includes the Pope) as we saw recently with the demise of King Hussein. Nostradamus often spoke metaphorically, so this may not be an actual person, but a ideology conflict. We certainly have seen events recently reflecting a growing concern about ideologies that propose the elimination of whole races of people. Not only have we, through NATO, quashed an attempt at ethnic "cleansing" in Kosovo, but there is now in Australia a political candidate who is reminiscent of Hitler. Since Leo is ruled by the Sun, and there is much stress with these heavy planets, we could also see increased solar flare activity.

Pluto Aspects

So how do we make the giant leap between the dire predictions and symbolism above and the positive meaning of the Sabian symbol? Some hope appears to rest in the condition of Pluto. Although not a participant in the grand cross configuration, it is, nevertheless powerful. First, a week after the eclipse Pluto ceases its retrograde motion and is stationary (from our vantage point). It is now leaving its 20+ year orbit inside the orbit of Neptune—i.e., orbiting closer to us than Neptune and therefore, moving faster. History has shown that these times of Pluto's accelerated speed coincide with remarkable events. Christ was born during one of these periods which only occur every 250 years, approximately. The last 20 years have certainly been remarkable, which is possibly an understatement.

Further, the planet making the most impact in any given situation is the slowest one. Pluto is not only the slowest at this time, it is barely moving at all. . . . stationary. But, best of all, it is aspecting the major players in the grand cross positively. It is sextile Neptune and Uranus, both in Aquarius. It has long been anticipated that when these two giants travelled through Aquarius, Neptune for 14 years and Uranus for 7, we would see more idealization of humanitarian attitudes. Neptune is the higher octave of Venus, the planet of love; Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury, which represents consciousness, communication and our ability to send and receive ideas. Neptune and Uranus are representative of spiritual values and freedom of the spirit, among several other things. Together they can represent awakening of the spirit, or compassion. Pluto is transformation and rebirth, and the sextile aspect is opportunity. It will not be automatic. This is an opportunity time to awaken to a higher level of consciousness regarding humanitarian (Aquarius) ideals. The eclipses of July 28th at 4:58 Aquarius and August 11 at 18:21 Leo energize this duo.

Pluto also trines the north node and sextiles the south node. Mercury is involved in this trine. Saturn gets too harsh a judgment most of the time, but if you consider that too much idealism without responsibility can amount to maudlin sentimentality with no substance behind it, then Saturn, although square Uranus, can be a positive influence in following through with concrete action and discipline. Seen from that viewpoint, then this grand square configuration can be a tremendous breakthrough in humanitarian understanding and action on this planet, for it does involve everyone everywhere.
